Due to his recent passing, John Bolton’s position as a Councillor became vacant.
The Heiltsuk Custom Election Rules govern how a vacancy on Council is to be filled. Because John’s term would have ended about 10 months from now (June 2018), according to the Rules the unsuccessful candidate with the next highest number of votes who was also running in the June 3, 2014 election when John got his position on Council, is to be asked to fill the vacancy. If that person cannot take John’s place, there would need to be a by-election.
According to the report filed by the Electoral Officer for the 2014 election, Valerie Humchitt was the unsuccessful candidate with the next highest number of votes. Val has been asked to fill the vacancy and HTC is pleased to announce that she has agreed. Val’s term of office will end when John’s would have, in June 2018.
HTC thanks Val for agreeing to take on this leadership role and extends a warm welcome to her. We also send our continuing condolences and thanks to John’s family for his years of service to our community.
